To Forge a Nation is an epic novel drawing on historical events of the late 19th and early 20th century in Sweden and the United States as built around the life, religious convictions, and social persuasions of Lutheran Pastor Amos Nordquist. Mr. Munson has undertaken an overwhelming task, diligently researching the times, locations, and events that the novel depicts. Nordquist is introduced as a member of a prosperous Swedish shipping family; in adulthood he settles in the United States. He arrives during latter phases of the Civil War and then lives successively in Minnesota, the Idaho mining country, and finally Seattle and its rural hinterland. In every location the author depicts overriding historical events and issues that typify the period. Fictional characters are representative of the times and locations, and occasional actual personages are brought to life.

Mr. Munson has done extraordinary research. Well-written, often intense, To Forge a Nation: An Immigrant Journey in an Immigrant Land, is an emotional, action-filled tour de force that leaves the reader with a vicarious sense of accomplishment – five talents well-invested – serving as reader encouragement and inspiration.

To Forge a Nation reads like a combined effort of Ken Follett and Louis L’Amour. Seeing historical events through the eyes of Amos Nordquist’s heart firmly places the reader in the historical moment, often with a spiritual perspective. In reading through the novel, Pastor Nordquist becomes a cherished friend and the pastor we all wish we had.
